MIRC was chartered in 2001 by the Rotary Club of Townsville Sunrise. Since its charter the club has always been known for its relaxed meetings and relaxed dress code in keeping with the island surroundings.
Several District Governors and other high ranking Rotary officials have rued the day that they wore a tie or even long pants to one of our meetings as they have left the meeting with only half a tie or even had long pants made into island style shorts. The club is also known for “punching above its weight” as small membership doesn’t mean small community benefit. MIRC even upset its sponsor club (Townsville Sunrise) who like to be first to do things when MIRC inducted a Guide Dog and its owner both as members of the club. This is believed to be the first time in Australia if not the world that a Guide Dog was inducted as a member of Rotary. Since starting the MIRC has run and participated in many festivals and events on the island. Recently it is known for the Magnetic Island Beer Can Regatta and the Magnetic Island Ambassador Awards, as well as a Golf Day. |
